Terms of Service

Last updated: August 20, 2026

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of Itumo (“Itumo,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a translation service for African indigenous languages and major world languages, available at itumo.online. By using Itumo, you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.

1. The service

Itumo lets you submit text and receive a translation between a supported African indigenous language and a supported world language (or vice versa), along with suggested corrections for things like missing tone marks, diacritics, or script errors. The service is provided for free today and does not require an account. We may change, add to, or remove features — including introducing accounts, paid plans, or advertising — at any time, and we’ll update these Terms and our Privacy Policy accordingly when we do.

2. Acceptable use

You agree not to use Itumo to:

  • Submit content that is unlawful, infringing, defamatory, or violates the rights of others.
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorized access to the service or its infrastructure.
  • Use automated means to scrape or extract large volumes of translations in a way that abuses the service.
  • Submit content on behalf of, or targeting, a third party without their consent, in a way that violates their privacy.
  • Use the service for any purpose that is illegal in your jurisdiction.

We may suspend or restrict access for anyone who violates these Terms.

3. Translation accuracy — no warranty

We hold Itumo’s translations to an exceptional standard, and our translation engine is designed to check its own output and correct common issues before returning a result. That said, Itumo is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis, and we do not warrant that any translation will be complete, error-free, or perfectly suited to your specific purpose. Machine translation — however carefully checked — can still make mistakes, particularly with idioms, ambiguous phrasing, or specialized terminology.

For anything high-stakes — legal, medical, financial, immigration, or other documents where an error could cause real harm — please use your own judgment and have the translation reviewed by a qualified human translator before relying on it. Itumo is a tool to help you communicate, not a substitute for professional translation or legal advice.

4. Intellectual property

Itumo, its logo, design, and underlying software are owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual property law. These Terms don’t grant you any rights to our trademarks, branding, or source code.

You retain ownership of the text you submit for translation. By submitting text, you grant us and our service providers (see Section 5) the limited right to process that text solely to provide the translation back to you. We don’t claim ownership over your content, and we don’t use it to train our own models.

5. Third-party services

Itumo relies on third-party services to operate, and your use of Itumo means your content may be processed by:

  • Anthropic — the AI provider whose model performs the translation and correctness check.
  • Vercel — our hosting provider.
  • Google AdSense (in the future) — planned advertising provider; not yet active.

These providers have their own terms and privacy practices. See our Privacy Policy for more detail on what each provider does with your data.

6. Availability and termination

We aim to keep Itumo available, but we don’t guarantee uninterrupted access — the service may be unavailable due to maintenance, outages at a third-party provider, or other factors outside our control. We may suspend or discontinue all or part of the service, or your access to it, at any time, including for violation of these Terms.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Itumo and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of the service — including damages resulting from translation errors, service unavailability, or reliance on translated content. Nothing in these Terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under applicable law (including certain consumer-protection rights in the EU).

8. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of European Union (EU/EEA), without regard to its conflict-of-law principles, except where mandatory local consumer-protection law gives you additional rights that cannot be waived.

9. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as Itumo changes — for example, when we launch advertising, accounts, or paid plans. We’ll update the “Last updated” date above when we do, and continued use of the service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.
